90% of pupils get the school they want

MORE than 90 per cent of children in Warrington have been offered their first choice of secondary school.
A total of 2,388 children will be starting Year 7 at a secondary school in the borough in September.
Their parents have already been notified, by letter or email, of the school they have been offered.
Figures show that 91 per cent of children were offered their first preference, six per cent were offered their second and 1.12 per cent their third.
Less than one per cent had none of their preferences met.
Figures from last year show that nationally, 85.5 per cent of children were offered their first preference. Latest published data suggests Warrington continues to outperform the national average, although this year’s national statistics won’t be published by the Department for Education until June.
The council’s lead member for children and young people, Cllr Jean Carter (pictured), said: “We do everything we can to accommodate preferences as far as is possible in order to achieve the best outcome for our children and young people.

“I’m delighted with these figures and that a large proportion of local children have been offered a place at their chosen secondary school. It is always the case that there is a small minority who did not get one of their choices and this can be distressing for parents and carers but there is an appeals process which they can go through. I would like to wish all pupils the very best as they embark on the latest chapter of their education.”
