Helping smokers to become “quitters”

ADVISORS from Warrington lifestyle and leisure group LiveWire were out in force in the town on “No Smoking Day – and believe they helped some people to become “Quitters.”
They were around Warrington Bus Station, giving advice and information about free help available to stop smoking.
Studies show that that two out of three smokers want to quit, but only one out of five actually do something about it.
Latest research shows that smokers have a 70 per cent increased risk of anxiety and depression when compared to non-smokers – despite the commonly held perception that lighting up is a stress reliever.
One woman who received help from LiveWire staff said: “I stopped to speak to a helpful advisor who discussed different quit options and the stop smoking drop-in sessions which I am interested in attending. Hopefully I will soon be well on my way to being smoke free.”
Dianne Clarke, LiveWire’s strategic lead for healthy lifestyles said: “We understand that the majority of smokers want to stop smoking, but many find the task too daunting.
“No Smoking Day provided the perfect opportunity to inspire smokers in Warrington to quit for good. LiveWire knows the importance of a successful quit attempt is to reassure people that they are not alone. We
are with them every step of the way offering advice and resources”.
Cllr Pat Wright, the borough council’s lead member for health, wellbeing and adult services, said: “It’s never too late to do something and get the help you need to quit smoking. I hope this day raised the awareness needed for people to take the first step and ask for help. The sooner you stop, the sooner the risks to your health will be reduced and you’ll be living a healthier life.”
