Bob Barr newJOB opportunities for young people in Warrington will get a major boost in April when employers taking on apprentices under the age of 25 will no longer have to pay employer National Insurance contributions up to the upper earnings limit.
The concession was announced by the Government in the autumn and Liberal Democrats in Warrington say it should make it much more attractive for employers to take on apprentices.
Cllr Bob Barr (pictured), the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Warrington South said: “Increasing the number of apprenticeships was a key aim of Liberal Democrats in Government.
“Since we formed the Coalition in 2010, we have helped to create nearly two million apprenticeships.
“Despite this success we want to go further. The cut in Employer National Insurance Contributions will make it even more attractive for employers to take on new apprenticeships.
“Here in Warrington hundreds of young people have benefited from training in the workplace and increased job opportunities because we have increased the number of apprenticeships. In the country as a whole, there are now 85 per cent more apprentices than there were under Labour at the same time as more students than ever are applying to university.
“But it is not just the individual young people who have benefited. Our country needs a highly skilled workforce if we are to be competitive and increase our manufacturing sector.
“Under the last Labour Government, our economy was too reliant on financial services. This was a disaster for the country.
“Liberal Democrats are building a stronger economy and a fairer society. Increasing apprenticeships is one of the ways we will achieve that.”
