New bridges deal to be signed today

David-Mowat-newMINISTER for Universities, Science and Cities Greg Clark will be in Cheshire today to sign the deal that will result in two new bridges to ease traffic congestion at Warrington.
And underlining the visit, Warrington South MP David Mowat (pictured) raised the issue at Prime Minister’s Question Time in the House of Commons yesterday.
He said the local growth deal would deliver two bridges for Warrington – infrastructure that had been much needed for the past 30 years.
He asked David Cameron: “Does the Prime Minister agree that the fact we are finally addressing such infrastructure needs demonstrates a commitment to the North West that was completely lacking under the previous Government?”
His question drew praise from the Prime Minister.
Mr Cameron replied: “I pay tribute to my Hon Friend who has campaigned consistently on this issue.
“When I visited his constituency, he showed me the difference that those announcements will make to Warrington South.
“ As a result of implementing the Cheshire and Warrington local growth deal, we expect to proceed with the construction of a high-level bridge crossing the Manchester Ship Canal.
“A new high-level crossing from the A56 Chester road will open up a substantial area of land for development immediately south of Warrington town centre.
“That will provide traffic relief, resilience, jobs, homes and livelihoods, which is what our long-term plan is all about.”
Warrington Chamber of Commerce chief executive Colin Daniels welcomed the announcement.
He said: “This should answer those who have been saying this would never happen.”
