Michelle Smith from BirchwoodUP to 80 housing association tenants are to be offered free membership of Warrington’s flagship tennis centre.
Warrington-based Your Housing Group has formed a partnership with Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex to offer the free tennis memberships at the centre on Benson Road, Birchwood.
The housing association has 1,800 properties in the Birchwood area – 80 per cent of the total population.
Available for anyone aged from four years to the over 65s, the free passes offer unlimited access and can be used all year round and at any time or day of the week.
The tennis centre, which is a member of the Lawn Tennis Association, will also offer tenants free coaching once a week and they will be able to bring friends and family to play on Sundays. Your Housing Group will also offer support in providing tenants with sportswear and equipment.
Pop-up coaching sessions will take place on Monday March 2 and Monday March 9 on the basketball multi-use games area on Leatham Close in Birchwood from 5pm – 6pm allowing residents to drop-by for a free taster tennis lesson. There will also be an open day at Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex on Sunday March 8 from 1pm – 3pm where anyone interested can get some free coaching on the outdoor courts and sign up on the spot.
Your Housing Group’s community projects manager, Andrew Edwards said: “It’s fantastic to have formed this partnership which gives local residents a life transforming opportunity. The club is at the
heart of our community in Birchwood, next to the high school and a short walk from our homes.
“The free places will enable our tenants to learn or improve their tennis skills, and stay fit, active and healthy as well as enjoying this popular and sociable sport. You never know, we might even find the next Andy Murray.”
John Whitehall, head of coaching and development at LiveWire, who operate the tennis centre, said: “Tennis is a game that can be played at any age and we want to encourage people in Birchwood to pick up a racket and have a go.
“Tennis is a fun and socialable game which can be played all year round.”
Michelle Smith (pictured) 37, from Birchwood, an amateur photographer and full time carer for her mother, who was the first tenant to sign up said: “I used to play twice a week but I can’t afford it now, having given up work to look after my sick mother. The free membership is great. I just need to find someone to team up with.”
