THE UK’s tallest player was in town over half term to deliver a three-day Basketball Camp at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub.
Paul Sturgess, who stands at 7’8”, was joined by team-mate David Aliu and coaches from Cheshire Phoenix, who play in the British Basketball League.
They coached a range of basketball skills, drills and games to 59 children between the ages of seven and 16, and the players also showed off their own techniques and demonstrated the importance of working in a team.
Matthew Parker, Sport Engagement Officer for LiveWire said: “We are delighted with the success of the camp and are glad to see so many children and young people attend. The opportunity to meet, and be coached by professional basketball players from across the world was one that they will never forget.”
Cheshire Phoenix Basketball Coach Lavery added: “It was great to see so many children take part in the half term camp ran by Cheshire Phoenix in partnership with LiveWire. The numbers were great and all the children had a fantastic time. As most of the children attended all three days it was great to see an improvement day after day. This is the first camp ran in Warrington by Cheshire Phoenix, with the success of the camp paired with the enthusiasm of the children we hope to run many more in the future.”
The camp was introduced as part of the new ‘Hoops 4 Health’ initiative which is being implemented across the North West of England and Wales.
The programme is currently being delivered in 16 primary schools across the town and uses professional sporting role models to engage with children to promote a healthier lifestyle.
The aim of the initiative is to encourage young people to stay physically fit, eat a balanced diet and raise awareness of the health risks associated with smoking.
