Town centre needs a theatre says councillor

celiajordanPLANS for a multi-plex cinema in the centre of Warrington should include a theatre, a councillor has suggested.
Cllr Celia Jordan (pictured) believes planners should insist that one of the cinema spaces should be flexible enough to be converted to a theatre as and when needed.
She said: “It would need some extra outlay to make a stage space deep enough and with the extra equipment. But it is hardly a new idea.
“There are lots of examples around, ranging from a tiny 300-seat venue in North Wales which shows films and hosts the Welsh Opera Company to the 3,000 seat Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool where a huge screen rises from the floor when the 100-player orchestra is not in situ.
“A new cinema in the centre of Warrington is much needed and long overdue. But if it included a theatre space, which could be used by touring professionals as well as local amateurs, it would be even more popular.”
Cllr Jordan called on local people and arts groups to support the idea.
The new cinema is included in the ambitious multi-million £ plan to re-develop the Bridge Street area, Time Square and the Market.
