Lord Chancellor's visit provides boost for Peace Centre

HOPES for Warrington Peace centre’s pioneering “Survivors for Peace” programme to receive ongoing funding received a major boost following a visit by the Lord Chancellor, Secretary of State for Justice, Chris Grayling.
The former Parliamentary Candidate for Warrington South, is the Minister directly responsible for helping secure Government funding for the project which supports victims of terrorism in the UK – with funding set to run out in a matter of weeks.
He was welcomed to the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace by local Warrington South MP David Mowat and peace campaigner Colin Parry OBE and Wendy Parry OBE, who launched the foundation 20 years ago following the Warrington bombing.
The Lord Chancellor was given an overview of the work of the Foundation, particularly its involvement with victims of terrorist atrocities and had a discussion about the future funding of the Foundation’s Survivors for Peace programme.
Last March, the Chancellor agreed to fund the programme for a further year, but that support is currently due to end in March.
Mr Mowat said:“It was an honour to welcome Chris back to Warrington South and to bring him to the Foundation which does so much to support victims of terrorist attacks.
“The Survivors for Peace programme is coming to the end of the deal that was agreed with the Government last year, so it was good to have the opportunity to raise the matter directly with the responsible minister.”
Mr Grayling, as Secretary of State, has oversight of all Ministry of Justice business and is responsible for making improvements to the criminal justice and prison system. He is also responsible for the resourcing of his department, overall strategy on criminal justice, penal policy, human rights and rehabilitation and other functions of the Lord Chancellor.
Colin and Wendy told him about the Centre and showed him the building while Chief Executive, Nick Taylor, set out the recently published manifesto for Peace that the Foundation has published and talked through the challenges faced by the organisation.
Mr Taylor said: “The Foundation is an independent charity but its aims are in accord with many of our national objectives to counter extremism and help those who have suffered through acts of terrorism and war.
“We set out our new manifesto for Peace and asked the Secretary of State to ensure that Government fully realises the social impacts we are having and how we need to attract long-term investment to support our work.”
