Pupils to show the way as town centre regeneration starts

PUPILS from 10 Warrington primary schools are to be asked to create original artwork for the hoardings that will surround the multi- million £ Bridge Street Quarter regeneration works when they get under way.
The hoardings will go around the existing market while it is being re-developed at the rear of Bridge Street.
Residents will old photographs of the market are also being asked to come forward to help create a “history timeline” that can also be used on the hoardings to tell the 760-year story of Warrington Market.
When completed the Bridge Street Quarter will create a flourishing new area for Warrington town centre with the new market hall, a multiplex cinema, a new public square surrounded by family friendly cafés and restaurants and a new civic centre.
It is being delivered in partnership with national property developer and urban regeneration specialist Muse Developments.
The aim of the art project is to appeal to local children to use their creativity and artistic talent to design a picture that depicts their ideas for the new market to help create a striking, visual interpretation of the neighbourhood.
Schools taking part in the art project include: Grappenhall Heys Primary, Latchford St James CE, St Monica’s Primary, Appleton, St Barnabas CE Primary, Evelyn Street Primary, Culcheth Primary, Great Sankey Primary and Brook Acre Primary.
By engaging with the local community, the borough council hopes to inspire and inform the public not only about the history of the market but also about its future by using the timeline and complementing it with images of how the new scheme and market will look when completed.
The earliest record of a market in Warrington is from around 1100 and the first market building was built in 1856.
Each school will be given a specific time period from the market’s 760 year history from which to base their artwork.
The school children’s designs when completed will be printed onto the hoarding that will be displayed around the market site for all to see while works are taking place.
Cllr Mike Hannon (right), deputy leader of the council said: “Approaching the local community and local school children will enable people to not only learn about their local environment but to also take an active role in helping to improve it. The hoardings will be a wonderful addition whilst the area is brought back to life.”
To submit any photos that members of the public might have of the old market please contact Mitch Poole at Warrington & Co. by email [email protected] or call 01925 442 243.
Work will commence on the construction of the multi-million pound Bridge Street regeneration project in the coming weeks.
The Bridge Street Quarter project is being managed by Warrington & Co., Warrington’s partnership for growth.
A fully fitted out temporary market hall will be the first element of the project to be built on the site of what is currently Time Square. The market will move into its temporary location during the period when the current market hall is being demolished and the new, permanent £10 million market hall is being constructed.
Market traders will move in to the new space early in 2017 and at no time will the market close or cease to trade.
When open in 2018 the new market hall will incorporate the magnificent, Grade 2 listed former Boots building façade on Bridge Street as one of its entrances. The opposite side of the building will feature entrances out towards the new square in front of the new multiplex cinema.
Access into the market will also be available from the two other sides of the building in order to generate and promote through footfall and promote business.
Following the erection of the hoardings selected tree felling will proceed around the Bridge Street Quarter to allow for drainage while regeneration works take place and an extensive replanting package is incorporated within the plans for the scheme.
