Tackling a dirty problem

HOUSING chiefs and members of the public at Warrington joined forces to tackle a dirty problem – dog fouling.
Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) and People and Dogs (PAD) in Bewsey and Dallam have came together for Dog Fouling Awareness week.
They mounted patrols in the street, handing out leaflets, dog fouling bags and advice to residents so they are aware of the rules and do not break the law.
Residents were invited to place posters in their windows as part of the campaign, with many taking the opportunity to show their support.
The RSPCA’s Warrington branch also backed the campaign through a talk on dog health at Bewsey Lodge Primary School.
The week was part of an initiative called People and Dogs (PAD) in Bewsey and Dallam.
PAD is a group of dog lovers and owners who have come together to support other dog owners in the area. Formed through a partnership with GGHT, Warrington Borough Council, Cheshire Police and local residents the group promotes responsible dog ownership and believe that every dog owner has their dog’s interest at heart.
The initiative is part of the “Delivering Wellbeing in Bewsey and Dallam project” which is being spearheaded by the council to revitalise the area
GGHT chairman Roy Smith said: “We would encourage everyone to get behind this campaign and crack down on dog dirt. We need to educate people about the risks to others posed by leaving this mess and the implications it can have on the whole community.”
Cllr Kate Hannon, the council’s lead member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “We know that most dog owners are responsible and clean up after their dogs, but sometimes this is not always the case.
“Dog fouling is a nuisance, it is unsightly and is a potential health risk especially for young children and sports clubs who play on local fields.
“It’s really important to educate people about the many problems dog fouling can cause in order to help prevent it and this campaign certainly helped us to do that.
