WARRINGTON people are being invited to take part in a service of remembrance and reflection to mark National Holocaust Memorial Day.
The service will be hosted by the Mayor of Warrington, Coun Graham Welborn, at the town’s Fish Market next Tuesday from 10.30am. There will be a musical performance by pupils from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
Following the service a book of remembrance will be placed in the Town Hall for residents to sign, until 12 noon on Friday January 30 when it will be moved to the Pyramid.
On Friday January 30, the winners of a local schools’ film, poster and poem competition on the theme “stand up to hatred’ will be announced. The event aims to help children understand the sacrifices made by previous generations.
The borough council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and communities, Coun Liz Smith, said: “The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is “stand up to hatred” and it is important that people remember those who experienced some of the most extreme situations and who died in the holocaust and other tragedies.
“I would invite all members of the public to visit the town hall and pay their respects by signing the book of remembrance.”
The book is available to sign until Tuesday February 3.
