Go to work – on the Trans Pennine Trail!

SECTIONS of the popular Trans Pennine Trail in and around the Warrington area are to be upgraded – to encourage people to use it for travelling to work.
Three councils – Warrington, Halton and St Helens – are joining forces to carry out the work.
Cllr Linda Dirir, lead member for highways, transportation and climate
change at Warrington Borough Council, said: “Lots of people travel between Warrington, St Helens, and Halton every day for work so we are working with our neighbours and partners to provide more routes for commuters, without having to get in a car.
“These schemes are a great example of the traffic free routes available and they are a good option for many cyclists and walkers in Warrington as they provide handy links to our extensive off-road cycle network.
“Plus, using sustainable modes of transport or getting active are both fantastic ways to have a positive impact on health and the environment.”
Stretching from Southport to Hornsea and from Leeds to Chesterfield, the Trans Pennine Trail passes through a wide range of urban and rural environments including national parks, industrial heritage areas, coastlines and city centres. Developed using existing resources wherever feasible, the Trail uses canal towpaths, disused railway lines, riverside pathways, urban cycle paths and minor roads for the majority of its course.
The upgraded sections have been funded by the Mid Mersey Project to inspire commuters to use the route as well as the many leisure users who enjoy the car-free sections of trail.
Over the coming months, work on the Sankey Valley section of the trail will be completed following an extensive upgrade, the new Farnworth-Sutton Greenway route will be opened to link Widnes and St Helens, and work will continue with businesses across St Helens, Halton and Warrington to help commuters switch to active travel.
