Garage must be used for cars

A HOUSEHOLDER has won a planning appeal to gain consent for a new garage – subject to a condition that it is kept available at all times for the parking of cars.
The development at Nygel McCormack’s home in Hatfield Gardens, Appleton consists of a first floor extension over an existing garage, which will be converted to a gym, a front extension to form a new garage and an extension over an existing family room.
Mr McCormack appealed against the borough council’s failure to deal with his application within the prescribed time limit.
However the council indicated it would have refused planning permission because it would result in parking on a shared turning area, resulting in lengthy reversing manoeuvres and on-street parking. They also pointed out there had been objections from neighbours.
The council accepted the new garage would be large enough for two cars but pointed out that most garages are not actually used for storing cars.
Planning inspector Graham Garnham said planning conditions to require garages to be used for parking cars were not unusual and could be enforced.
Subject to such a condition, he concluded the proposal would not cause any harm to highway or pedestrian safety.
