THE Parliamentary Rugby League Group has announced Warrington Wolves as a new Associate Member of the group.
Wolves are the latest club to join the group as Associate Members, alongside fellow Super League clubs Hull KR, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors, Championship Club Batley Bulldogs, League One club Oxford RL, and community club Brentwood Eels.
As well as clubs, the Parliamentary Group welcomes other organisations and individuals as Associate Members. All agree to the Group’s constitution and its sole remit to “support the game of rugby league football”.
They are welcome to take part in the Group’s monthly meetings in the palace of Westminster and attend the Group’s Annual Dinner in the House of Lords.
The announcement was made by the Group’s Vice-Chairman David Mowat, (pictured right) who represents Wolves in the Warrington South constituency. He said: “I’m very pleased Wolves have joined the Parliamentary Rugby League Group. The Rugby League Group is very active in Westminster and has become a powerful voice for the sport.
“The club is not without representation in Parliament, as well as me as their local MP, the club and the group share a President in Lord Hoyle, but now they have joined the Parliamentary Rugby League Group, fellow MPs can hear their thoughts directly. I look forward to welcoming them to meetings.”
Lord Hoyle added: “I am very proud Warrington Wolves have joined the group and certainly we look forward in the Parliamentary Group to welcoming them, They will bring to the group a wide knowledge of rugby league because they have been one of the leading clubs ever since its formation.”
Steven Broomhead, Chairman of Warrington Wolves, echoed this sentiment, saying “like any proud rugby league town, Warrington has had the support of its Members of Parliament such as David Mowat in Warrington South, Helen Jones in Warrington North, and before her, Doug – now Lord – Hoyle. We’ve therefore had a good relationship with the Parliamentary Group since its creation in 1988 but with our Associate Membership, we are able to take part in discussions as they happen in Westminster and we are very much looking forward to continuing our active involvement at this important level.”
