1,323 still paying bedroom tax

A TOTAL of 1,323 households in Warrington are still paying the “bedroom tax” according to Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
This shows that it has not been possible for many people to escape the tax by moving to smaller properties.
Figures obtained by the MP in Parliament show that out of 9,466 households in receipt of housing benefit in Warrington, 1,323 have to pay bedroom tax on the grounds that they have unused bedrooms.
Ms Jones (pictured) said: “We know that this unfair tax, contrary to what the Tories promised, hits people with serious medical conditions who need space to store equipment, carers who can’t share a room with their partner and people who simply can’t find a smaller property.
“In fact, smaller private sector properties often cost more in local
housing benefit.
“It is time for this unfair tax to be abolished as Labour has promised and for us to invest in social housing to tackle our shortage of affordable homes.”
