POLICE are working with retailers across a wide area of South Warrington this month to combat shoplifting.
Officers are making the problem a priority in Lymm, Grappenhall and Thelwall, meeting with shopkeepers and holding regular community engagement meetings.
A “Shop Watch” scheme is up and running in some shops, and is proving a useful tool in assisting police to quickly identify repeat offenders and subsequently bring them to justice.
Residents are also being warned to be on their guard against thefts from motor vehicles – particularly on dark, frosty mornings.
Motorists are advised to be vigilant when de-frosting vehicles, never leaving them unattended while the engine is running.
Thefts are garden sheds and outbuildings are also prevalent at this time of the year.
Residents are advised to keep all outbuildings securely locked, to mark garden tools with a UV pen, including their name and postcode.
Serial numbers should be noted and bikes chained together or to a permanent structure.
Security lights also deter thieves, police say.
