Sports complex wins longer hours

A MAJOR new sports and community hub to be built in Warrington’s Victoria Park is to be allowed to stay open until midnight – to allow for greater use of the facilities and promote active lifestyles.
Planning chiefs have agreed that a floodlit rugby pitch with 300-seater grandstand can stay open until 10.30pm while the community facilities – including a community room and bar – can stay open until midnight.
Originally, when the facility was granted permission earlier this year, conditions were imposed that would have meant the whole complex had to close at 10pm, with all floodlighting switched off 30 minutes after the sports pitch ceased to be in use.
This was to protect the residential and visual amenity of nearby residents.
Planning officers recommended the extended hours be approved as they would be unlikely to cause undue harm to the amenities of nearby residents of the character and appearance of the area.
They argue that the later opening hours will result in wider community use after normal working hours.
