Young people heard by Police

YOUNG voices in Cheshire have been heard loud and clear by the Youth Ambassador Dominic Rogers, who has based his priorities on the feedback from young people.
Throughout 2014, Dominic consulted with young people from across the county to find out what they wanted the police to prioritise in their area and what they thought of the policing service they receive.
Dominic said: “It’s important that young people have the opportunity to have an active say in policing. The feedback I receive influences the projects that I work on with young people and partner agencies to improve policing services for young people. The feedback also helps to inform the Commissioner’s Police & Crime Plan.
“I hope that by working to give young people the knowledge they need to make informed decisions will empower them to stay safe and contact the police if they need them.”
The top five priorities that young people said they want the police to prioritise are: drugs and alcohol, anti-social behaviour, robbery/theft, road safety and personal safety.
Another question in the survey asked ‘what change would you make to policing in your area?’ Officer visibility, attitude and accessibility ranked in the top five responses.
Dominic added: “One of the main projects I’m working on focusses specifically on officer interactions with young people. Training packages are being developed to give officers the skills they need to ensure they talk to young people appropriately, and do not alienate them.
“The consultation shows that 46% of young people thought that the police did a good or excellent job. I hope that by working on the various projects that I have running, I’ll be able to improve the number of positive interactions between the police and young people.”
