Birchwood pupils can keep cooking!

BIRCHWOOD Community High School will be able to continue with its healthy eating initiative thanks to a donation from The Food Education Trust charity.
The initiative is now in its second phase, allowing the school to expand its food education curriculum.
The Food Education Trust received a request for extra cookery equipment from Birchwood High Community School as it wanted to continue with its Healthy Eating Initiative, but was limited to the recipes pupils could cook as additional equipment was required. The Food Education Trust supported the school by donating a vast range of cookery equipment, enabling learners to become more adventurous in the kitchen and produce a wider range of healthy meals.
Tracy Lynskey, who facilitated the courses at the school, said: “Last academic year Birchwood Community High School started a healthy eating initiative to give a group of learners the skills to prepare and cook healthy, appetising meals. The successful bid for funding from the Food Education Trust gave us the equipment we needed to further the initiative and run a second healthy eating competition with a different group of learners.”
Romilla Arber, founder of The Food Education Trust said: “The government has significantly reduced money available to schools and obesity levels are increasing, costing the NHS billions of pounds annually. I fully support projects such as the one undertaken by Birchwood Community High School as they encourage children to learn how easy it is to cook a healthy meal from scratch without resorting to convenience foods which are high in fat, sugar and salt. These initiatives give children confidence in the kitchen which helps them throughout life.”
