Warrington call for a county radio station

WARRINGTON Borough Council is to be asked to support a move to persuade the BBC to launch a “Radio Cheshire” serving the whole of the county.
The call comes from Cllr Ian Marks (pictured), leader of the Liberal Democrat group.
He suggests the BBC should also be asked to set up a website covering the same area as the new radio station.
He said: “There is a missing piece in the BBC’s north west radio station jigsaw – Cheshire.
“They have radio stations covering Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria, but nothing for Cheshire. Similarly there are sections of their website for every part of the region other than Cheshire.
“The new radio station would cover the local authority areas of Warrington, Halton, Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester.
“Perhaps a first step might be to ask the other local authorities to support us.
“The other BBC radio stations are currently funded from the licence fee and taxes so it is only fair that we in Cheshire should get a similar service.”
Cllr Marks said he realised there would be a cost involved in setting up a new radio station. But he did not think it would cost much to include a “Cheshire” section on the BBC website.”
He plans to put a motion to next week’s meeting of the borough council asking them to make an approach to the BBC.
His motion is seconded by Cllr Celia Jordan.
