28% of our children are obese

MORE than 28 per cent of children in Warrington North are obese – and more than 24 per cent of the population as a whole is obese.
The shock figures have been produced by the charity Sustrans, who also say air pollution levels stand at 10.6 ug/m3 – particulate matter which is closely associated with adverse health effects.
The figures are worrying constituency MP Helen Jones (pictured)
She said: “These figures, whilst not the worst in the country, are worrying with nearly a quarter of adults, and over a quarter of children, obese.
“People often forget the health risks which are attached to obesity – cardiovascular disease, cancers, diabetes, mental ill-health and high blood pressure.
“Regular physical activity, including walking and cycling will help reduce obesity and the associated health risks.
“The government is also failing to address the problems of air pollution properly with a typical UK city suffering 200 deaths and more than 2,000 life years lost because of poor air quality.
“We need government to take action to transform routes, support walking and cycling and tackle air pollution properly.”
