PUPILS from a Warrington school were given a lesson in road safety including the dangers of speeding traffic by community police officers Tony Spruce and Tom Reid.
The Year 5 pupils at Our Lady’s School, Latchford were told about the green cross code, while a demonstration using eggs highlighted the importance of using a helmet when riding a bike.
The children dropped two eggs one of which was covered by a polystyrene helmet which didn’t smash while the unprotected egg shattered.
The pupils were told about the dangers of speeding traffic, especially along Wash Lane outside school and were told about braking distances at increased speeds. The pupils were then tasked to design a leaflet that could be handed to motorists who were exceeding the speed limit.
Following the lessons in road safety involving a Speed Identification Device (S.I.D), the equipment was set up on Wash Lane.
Vehicles that exceeded the speed limit were stopped further along Wash Lane where the drivers were advised on the dangers of speeding especially outside the school.
The drivers were also handed one of the leaflets designed by the pupils. During a period of half an hour 15 vehicles were stopped and the drivers advised about their speeding.
