A 26-year-old woman from Warrington has been arrested in connection with a series of arson incidents in the borough.
She was arrested following an investigation by police following a series of fires involving bins and skips in the Longford and Orford areas of the town.
She is the second person to have been arrested. A man was held earlier – but later released without charge.
Emergency services have responded to a number of fire calls in the early hours of Wednesday and yesterday (Thursday).
The fires – some of which were lit close to residential properties – were extinguished by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Superintendent Martin Cleworth, said: “This is an extremely dangerous form of anti-social behaviour with potentially serious consequences and not something which can be tolerated. I would appeal to anyone who might have information to come and speak to us.
“I also want to urge residents to be mindful of these incidents at this time and to keep wheelie bins in a secure place wherever possible.”
Fire Station Manager for Warrington Paul Jackson said: “It is shocking to see how reckless some people can be. Wheelie bin fires are so dangerous and can easily spread to buildings with devastating consequences.
“In order to reduce the opportunities for arsonists, businesses and homeowners can help by making sure they do not leave their bins out overnight and report any suspicious behaviour to police.”
The 26-year old woman is now being questioned in relation to the fires and police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen anything to come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101 quoting incident number 979 of 20/11/2014, or alternatively to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
