A “SCRUB BASH” is to take place at the Rixton Claypits Local Nature Reserve – and new Warrington North Conservative Prospective Parliamentary candidate Richard Short (pictured) will be joining in.
The event, on Sunday, December 21 will involve volunteers clearing scrub – small trees and bushes – as part of a three year project to reclaim areas of once wildflower-rich meadow and several shaded out ponds.
Park ranger Marcus Walsh invited Mr Short after hearing he wanted to get involved in some voluntary work in the area.
He said: “I thought it would be useful for him to get an idea of the work we do.”
Mr Short said: “I will be going along and would like to get as many volunteers there as possible.”
The scrub bash will take place between 1.30pm and 3pm and the work will help conserve a protected species – the Great Crested Newt.Once a clay extraction site, Rixton Claypits is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a local nature reserve.
The claypits include a diverse range of habitats and is a wildlife haven where both the keen naturalist and casual visitor will find things of interest.
Easy to follow paths lead to ponds, wildflower meadows, quiet corners and woodland.
