Police target travelling criminals

POLICE across Cheshire are taking part in an operation to target travelling criminals from outside the county – such as those who use the motorway network near Warrington to move swiftly into the area and then out again.
Burglaries and car crime are their main activity and police believe they are attracted by the perceived wealth of affluent Cheshire villages and towns.
Chief Superintendent Craig Guildford said: “Our intelligence picture suggests that criminals are often attracted by the perceived wealth of affluent Cheshire villages and towns.
“The purpose of this operation is to identify and target criminals from the surrounding areas of Merseyside, North Wales, Staffordshire and Manchester as they travel into Cheshire to commit crime.
“We will effectively deploy appropriate police resources and use up to date technology as well as more traditional policing methods as we do all we can to reduce the number of burglaries committed as the longer nights draw in.”
Police are gathering information on criminal movement, identifying individuals and their vehicles and responding to intelligence regarding imminent criminal activity.
Chief Superintendent Guildford added: “Last year we ran a similar operation that saw excellent results and 20 arrests for a variety of offences.
“We have achieved a 28 per cent decrease in recorded house burglaries in recent months, and 17 per cent across Cheshire as a whole. We want to build on this success to help our residents to feel safe in the knowledge that we are out on the streets, identifying and apprehending those who commit serious and acquisitive crime.”
