Hi-Tech success story – thanks to Daresbury

A HI-TECH company which develops and supplies materials for 3D printing has praised Daresbury’s enterprise zone, near Warrington, for being pivotal to its success.
LWP Technology was founded at the Sci-Tech Daresbury enterprise zone in 2012 and now employs over 40 people, with a turnover of more than £4.5 million.
Figures released today show the Government’s 24 enterprise zones have created 12,530 jobs, attracted 434 new businesses and generated more than £2 billion worth of private investment since opening for business.
Sci-Tech Daresbury has played its part in that success as it works towards its ambition of creating 10,000 jobs over the next 20 years. The zone is home to more than 100 hi-tech companies, including LPW Technology, Perceptive Engineering and Enhanced Hydrocarbon Technologies.
There are also several cutting-edge science and business collaborations involving IBM, BAe Systems and Unilever.
LPW Technology was founded by academic researcher Phil Carroll (pictured) and the firm now enjoys a 30 per cent market share in its sub-sector and estimates its value to the local economy is around £1.5 million.
Phil said: “The enterprise zone had the vision to take a risk on a start-up working on tomorrow’s technologies, today.
“LPW started on the enterprise zone. As an engineer by training, I knew little about business. I was grateful for the incentives, soft landing package and access to practical support I needed to succeed as a start-up company.
“Bringing our product to market required that we move off the zone and into the manufacturing sector. UKTI helped us to break into global markets. We now serve as part of the supply chain for companies on Sci-Tech Daresbury enterprise zone.”
Communities secretary Eric Pickles said: “Enterprise zones are proving that our long-term economic plan is on track, creating thousands of jobs, attracting billions of pounds of investment and proving Britain is a
great place to do business.
“This is just the start. We have worked hard over the past few years turning shovel-ready sites into job-ready sites. That work is now done and we are seeing more and more investors sign deals that will create tens of thousands more jobs over the coming years. That’s great news for local communities and great news for the economy.”
John Downes, chief executive of Langtree and director of the Sci-Tech Daresbury joint venture board, added: “We are delighted by the continued success of Sci-Tech Daresbury and the role it has played in the creation of high value jobs for the North West economy.
“Its unique assets, combined with its growing national and international reputation as a centre for collaboration and the commercialisation of innovation, make it a compelling proposition as a business and enterprise destination.”
