Trading standards warn over doorstep sellers

TRADING standards are warning residents to be on their guard after a 94-year-old man in Orford was conned into buying £230 worth of fish.
The trader took an instant payment for the fish using an electronic card reader and has said he will be returning in six months with more fish.
Peter Astley, assistant director for regulation and public protection, said: “Residents need to be vigilant about the activities of rogue traders who are selling fish door to door who are currently operating in the borough. The message is simple ‘Do Not Buy From Them’. We are urging residents, neighbours and family members to report all instances to us which provides valuable intelligence to the on-going national investigation.”
Cllr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “Residents are encouraged to use Warrington local businesses and not to feel pressurised into buying anything from doorstep traders. We would ask that residents remain vigilant and alert and report anything suspicious to our officers.”
Trading Standards advise consumers to report any suspicious callers to them on 03454 040506. If you are able to provide the vehicle registration number this will assist in the investigation. Mobile sellers may also require a licence from Warrington Borough Council.
