Volunteers give grot-spot a makeover

VOLUNTEERS put in a hard day’s work to clean up a Warrington grot spot.
Local residents joined forces with the borough council’s central neighbourhood team and nearby firm Novelis to give the Mersey Walk area at Westy a makeover.
The main focus of the clean-up was a 300 metre length fencing which was in bad condition due to weathering and vandalism.
Together, the volunteers repaired the broken fence, re-painted it and also removed overgrown bushes and weeds from the surrounding area.
Afterwards, the volunteers were invited to Westy Community Centre for a well-earned buffet.
Local councillor Steve Wright presented a “Volunteer of the Day” award to Sam, a young volunteer who had helped to paint the fence.
Cllr Kate Hannon, the council’s lead member for leisure, community and culture, said: “It’s fantastic to see that there were such a great number of people who turned up to help out on the day. We are keen to make sure that the areas of Warrington are kept clean and tidy and we hope to continue to hold these community clean-up days as they always prove to be a great success.
“However, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action against those who continue to fly tip and drop litter.
“I would like to thank all of the volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm on the day as they have made a real difference in their area.”
