Planners approve pub illuminations

PROPOSALS for new illuminated signs on one of Warrington’s most attractive old pubs by been approved by planning chiefs..
Punch Taverns are to be allowed introduce the new signage at the Grade 2 Listed Pickering Arms, in Bell Lane, Thelwall as part of a renovation and upgrade of the black-and-white, half-timbered building.
Local councillor Wendy Johnson opposed the illuminated signs in view of the status and siting of the building and proliferation of signage.
Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council also expressed concern about the use of illuminated signs on a Listed building in a Conservation area.
But planning officers said the existing main fascia signs were illuminated by two large, visually obtrusive projecting troughlights which were of disproportionate size.
The replacement signs would not result in the loss of, or obscuring of, any features of visual merit and will expose more of the building and its overall architectural integrity.
“Halo illumination” of the type proposed would not be brash or overly prominent on the street scene.Members of the planning committee decided the new illuminated signs were acceptable – but that a proposed free standing sign was superfluous and should not be allowed.
