War Memorial rededication honours the fallen from Sankey and Penketh

THE Sankey and Penketh war memorial has been rededicated in a poignant unveiling after undergoing renovation works.
Voluntary group The Friends of St Mary’s Cemetery are behind the repair works on the memorial, which is located in the cemetery on St Mary’s Road.
During the works, masonry on the memorial was repaired, while two new plaques have also been added to the monument.
Group chair Trudi Wood said “The existing Second World War plaque did not match the original one from the Great War (as the recesses on the Memorial indicated it should have been), so we have now done this and also added a plaque for all who have died in later conflicts.
It was such an honour to undertake this renovation and we were proud that the parents of Steven Birdsall and Tom Sephton agreed to unveil the Memorial with the new plaques”.
The Friends group also added that they had many people to thank for their contributions of time, expertise and finances that led to the event in October which closely mirrored the original unveiling service from 1922.
“We cannot name them all as there are simply too many; but they know who they are and they have our sincere gratitude.”
