Council clear grot spot and launch crack down on fly tippers

A COUNCIL team descended on a well known Warrington “grot spot” and carried out a crash clean-up following a plea for help from two councillors.
Fly-tipping, debris and fouling had blighted land at the rear of Marbury Street, Latchford, close to Victoria Park.
But after ward councillors Maureen McLaughlin and Les Morgan (pictured above) demanded action a Town Hall clean-up squad descended on the area and cleaned it up.
Now a long term plan to make sure the fly tippers do not return is being worked up.
The fly-tipping problem (pictured right) has been going on for some time, combined with issues with private land that backs onto a railway line.
Despite previous involvement from council enforcement officers, including court action against a private landowner, local residents complained that the fly-tipping has returned worse than before.
The two councillors met with Town Hall officers to demand a thorough and long-term plan for tackling the problem properly.
Cllr McLaughlin said: “I am grateful because our request for an urgent clean-up was dealt with immediately.
“The council sent in a team to clear-up the debris, fly-tipping and fouling that had blighted one end of this street and which was creating a potential public health risk.”
Then the councillors sat down with executive director for environment regeneration Andy Farrall and hammered out a long-term plan of action.
As part of this plan, officers are now contacting every property individually as well as speaking with local landlords, to make sure that everyone understands their responsibilities when it comes to household waste.
In addition, the area will be monitored on a weekly basis and the environmental team will be gathering evidence which can be used against those responsible.
Clearer signage is being put up in the area and issues over private land will also be followed-up.
Cllr Morgan said: “The problem is caused by a handful of thoughtless people. We are determined to crack down on this to improve the area for the majority of law-abiding residents who want to take pride in their homes and in their local area.
“As local councillors we will not stand by and let this happen in our area. We’re pleased that officers have taken our concerns seriously and are working with us to achieve improvements for the long-term.”
Nationally, the Local Government Association is calling for further powers to punish fly-tippers, with on-the-spot fines and fixed penalty notices.
