Poor communication adds to traffic chaos

TRAFFIC problems in Warrington are bad enough – without the added issue of poor communications when road works are taking place across the town.
Every time there is an accident on any of the motorways surrounding the town, we experience gridlock – the very same motorways which make Warrington such a popular destination, become our worst nightmare – made even worse by road works taking place at opposite sides of the town.
I am sure roadworks are programmed well in advance so one wonders why they often seem to take place at the same, clogging main arteries either side of town, most recently on Cromwell Avenue off Sankey Way and on Knutsford Road near the Black Bear Bridge.
Never in my wildest dreams would I expect to be stuck in a traffic jam at 6.45pm on a Friday evening heading out of town.
As a result of confusing road works signs and contractors closing the road half an hour ahead of schedule there was absolute chaos, with vehicles, including Network warrington buses being forced to perform u-turns into on coming traffic, to head back down Knustford Road. It is a miracle there wasn’t a serious accident.
Not only was the signage inadequate but there was no one around directing traffic.
It is not the first and I am sure it will not be the last time we have had problems on our highways – whoever can forget the Asda roundabout farce on Cromwell Avenue and then the lane markings on Bridgefoot outside The Academy!
Judging by the number of out bursts on social media regarding the traffic problems it is clearly not just me who is experiencing the problems.
Come on Warrington Borough Council – it has never been easier to engage with your public – use your media channels and social media networks properly – and remember a successful business does not operate 9am-5pm five days a week.
If road works and closures are going to happen out hours, keep the communications channels open out of hours
