How you can really save money when learning to drive
Learning to drive is possibly one of the most expensive things you will do in life, but once you have done it, you will have gained a big asset. There are ways to keep the costs down when learning to drive which could help you enormously.

Choosing your Driving School/Instructor
When you choose your driving school, listen to your friends who have previously had lessons to see who they would recommend and read reviews online; you can also search on the internet for the best offers available for driving lessons. Many of the national driving schools offer discounts for block bookings or students, so look into them closely to find the one right for your needs. Intensive driving courses can work out cheaper, but they are hard work, and do not go well with everyone, so this is something you can weigh up for yourself. Make sure that the driving instructor is approved by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) as all reputable instructors will be.

Booking Your Practical Driving Test

Not many people are aware that when you book your practical driving test, it is actually cheaper to have your test during the week. At the moment it costs £62 for a week day test, and goes up to £75 for a weekend test or week day evening test, a difference of £13! Make sure that you try to take your test in the week during the day, which may mean more traffic about at peak times, but you have to get used to driving in traffic anyhow. It is worth having taking time off from school, college or work, if possible, to take your test on a week day.

Theory, Hazard Perception Test
You have to pass your Theory Test before you can take your Practical Driving Test, so it is important to practice the theory questions and hazard perception scenarios as much as possible. Some national Driving Schools have free access to Theory and Hazard Perception Tests that will assist you in preparation for the real thing. Your driving instructor can take a look at your development, which enables them to plan your lessons around your personal needs. Make sure you have plenty of practice before taking your test, just to make sure you are confident when you go in – by passing your theory and practical test first time, you will save yourself a substantial amount of money.
