Wacky scientist to visit shopping centre

KIDS with a burning desire to make their own exploding smoke bubbles or turn out some neat bouncing slime balls should get along to Warrington’s Golden Square Shopping Centre at the end of the month.
Waiting for them will be crazy scientist Wacky Jacky who will use her expert hair-brained knowledge to guide them through a range of action-packed experiments aimed at giving their half term holidays a real fizz.
As part of Golden Square’s special Discover and Do programme centre director Ian Cox has arranged a series of free family activities on a science theme to run throughout the final week of October.
Wacky Jacky will lead two experiment sessions on Thursday and Friday, October 30 and 31, from 11am-4pm when the focus will be firmly on
encouraging youngsters to join in and enjoy themselves while learning a little about the basics of science at the same time.
The barmy boffin said: “We’ll be doing all sorts of crazy things like
producing smoke bubbles and smoke rings, making bouncy slime balls and even whipping up batches of sherbet.
“We blow the smoke rings and smoke bubbles out of a special machine. The rings we end up with are massive and the smoke bubbles are just enormous. When the bubbles eventually land on the floor they explode in all directions, which is a really spectacular to see.
“To produce the slime we’ll be mixing together some really gloopy ingredients like glue and food colouring and then rolling up the resulting goo to make little balls which the kids can bounce all the way home!
“In another of our experiments will be coming up with a sherbet mixture using some amazing yet still edible ingredients. If they haven’t eaten the lot by the end of the session they can take some of that home with them too.”
Mr Cox said: “We are at the heart of the Warrington community and so we are always looking for ways to help parents entertain the children during the school holidays.
“Wacky Jacky’s fun, scientific experiments will be one of the main draws during several days of free, half term fun and I would urge families to come along and make the most of the sessions while also taking advantage of our great range of shops, cafes and restaurants too.”
Wacky Jacky added: “I’m aiming my sessions at Golden Square at primary school children aged between five and 12 and the whole idea is to let youngsters know that science can be a lot of fun.
“By doing the experiments, which they are very much encouraged to join in, I’ll hopefully be passing on some of basics of science in a very understandable and enjoyable way.
“Although it’s the first time I’ll have visited Golden Square, I’ve done these experiments with kids right across the country and they go down really well with them.
“They are absolutely fascinated with what I show them and it’s great to see the look of awe on their faces when the experiments work – the exploding smoke bubbles really make them gasp in amazement. I can’t wait to get there and get started.”
Other Discover and Do science sessions at Golden Square scheduled for earlier in the week, also from 11am-4pm are Growing Magnets on Monday,
October 27, Clay Volcanoes on Tuesday, October 28 and Lab Coat Decorating on Wednesday, October 29.
