DETECTIVES are urging people to be extra vigilant and appealing for information following a distraction burglary at the home of an elderly couple on Manchester Road, Warrington.
The incident happened at 3pm on October 6 when a man knocked on the door of a property and started talking to the two elderly occupants.
He claimed that he was doing some work on a burst pipe next door and asked if he could see the back garden.
Both the victims went round to the back of the property with the man and, when they returned, they discovered that someone had entered the property, searched the upstairs bedrooms and had stolen a coat and portable DVD player.
Detectives have launched an investigation in a bid to trace those responsible. Enquiries are being carried out in the local area and anyone with any information, which could assist with those enquiries, is urged to get in touch.
The man is described as white, in his 40s, of medium build and around 5? 7″ tall. He was wearing a black cap and had short dark hair.
DC Neil Radley said: “This is a distressing crime as offenders target victims in the one place they should feel safest ? in their own home. We are doing all we can to trace those responsible and are appealing for any information from the local community, which might assist with our enquiries. Even the smallest amount of information can be useful when piecing together a case.
“Residents are urged to be extra vigilant when answering the door to any unexpected callers. If you are unsure regarding the identity of the caller then keep them out. Ask them to make an appointment or come back later when someone else can be present. If you?re suspicious then report the incident to the police immediately.”
Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 546 of 6th October. Information can also be left anonymously, via Crimestopprs, on 0800 555 111.
