Hate Crime a top priority for Commissioner

WITH Hate Crime being under reported across the country Cheshire’s Police & Crime Commissioner John Dwyer is working hard to raise awareness and encouraging people to come forward and report the crime.
At the start of Hate Crime Awareness Week (October 13-19) Mr Dwyer said, “Hate Crime Awareness week, once again helps us to raise awareness and give people the courage to speak about the prejudice they have been subjected to. Here in Cheshire, Hate Crime is under reported and this could be for a variety of reasons, but I want to do everything I can to ensure that the correct help and support is available to those who need it.”
Mr Dwyer has done a variety of things to raise the awareness of Hate Crime. He’s awarded funds to projects such as; DIAL house in Chester, Halton’s Seek & Speak Group, and Adrian Derbyshire’s Hate Crime Disability Awareness Tour and money to the Community and Voluntary Sector for campaigns.
Most recently he also pledged to invest £60,000 in services that support victims of Hate Crime. To coincide with Hate Crime Awareness Week the Commissioning Officers from the Commissioner’s Office are meeting with the providers of these services to see how best to allocate the money so victims across the county can receive additional help and support.
Mr Dwyer added, “Hate Crime is abhorrent to me. Nobody should tolerate abuse of any kind and I am seeking to address the need of people who perceive that a crime has been committed against them based on prejudice. I would urge anyone who has been abused in this way to report it, either to the police or to reporting centres which are located across the county.”
