Beware the winter vomiting disease

WARRINGTON residents are being warned about the dangers of Norovirus, the “winter vomiting” disease, after a local outbreak has seen a number of people affected.
Norovirus affects 600,000 to one million people in the United Kingdom every year and can be a nasty experience for those affected.
However it is normally a short-lived infection which most people recover from in 12 to 60 hours. The condition is highly contagious unless great care is taken to stop it from spreading.
Warrington CCG chief nurse and quality lead John Wharton said: “We are starting to see outbreaks of the winter vomiting bug in the community and hospitals.
“Norovirus can spread easily in places where people live or work in close proximity, such as hospitals, residential care homes and schools. “However, there are things that people can do to reduce the risk of passing the infection on and limit the impact of the bug.”
They should stay and home and ensure that personal hygiene is maintained – in particular that hands are washed frequently with soap and water.
Alcohol hand gel is ineffective against Norovirus.
Victims should drink plenty of fluids, clean toilet seats, taps and door handles with hot water and bleach and stay away from A&E or their GP surgery.
People usually recover within a few days without treatment and only if symptoms persist for more than 48 hours should they call the doctor or NHS 111.
