Physicist-farmer stages art exhibition

A FORMER research physicist at Warrington, who made a massive career change to become a farmer, is to hold his first and probably only solo art exhibition – at the age of 82.
Michael Madden, of Oaklegh Lodge Farm, Barleycastle Lane, Appleton, hopes to sell up to 100 of his paintings by Dutch Auction .
The watercolours, acrylics, pastels and oils will be on show from Wednesday to Sunday (October 15-19) in a barn at the farm, from 10am to 5pm.
The sale will be by undisclosed bids, minimum £10 at a cost of £1 per bid-ticket sold on site in aid of St Rocco’s Hospice, Warrington. Successful bidders will be notified for payment after the free exhibition has ended.
Michael showed an early talent for art at school, but became a research physicist working for the Central Electricity Generating Board and the National Nuclear Corporation for more than 31 years.
But in the 10 years following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, many scientists and engineers in the Warrington area lost their jobs as the UK nuclear construction industry was dismantled.
So in 1991, Michael, then 58, with his wife Christine and children Gerard and Pamela, started to farm a 14-acre smallholding, breeding pigs and sheep. About the same time he went back to painting – joining Warrington Art Group.
He has exhibited with fellow members of the group at Warrington Art Gallery, Dunham Massey, Arley Hall and Tatton Park.
