Warrington Town fall to smash and grab

A LATE goal denied Warrington Town three points as Burscough completed a smash and grab at the Winners Recruitment Stadium tonight (Tuesday).
After missing a number of chances in the second half, Shaun Reid’s side were forced to settle for a point, with former Town striker Mark Beesley’s late goal securing a 1-1 draw for the visitors, who had been on the back foot for most of the match.
Warrington had led through Scott Metcalfe’s 11th goal of the season, a well struck left footed shot past the goalkeeper’s left hand after a direct run through midfield by Conor Roberts.
The woodwork denied Town the chance to double their lead, when James McCarten’s header deflected off a defender and against the post, before the visitors were able to clear.
Metcalfe almost had his and Town’s second before half time too, when his right foot shot was pushed around the post by Burscough ‘keeper Dean Pye.
Town continued to control the game at their own pace in the second half, and had a penalty shout turned down shortly after the break, when Roberts went down in the box.
Striker Ben Wharton was then released by Roberts down the left, and ran along the byline, firing off a shot from a tight angle which was stopped by the ‘keeper.
A Metcalfe shot bounced just wide of the post, and then Craig Robinson headed over at the back post.
Town’s best chance fell for Steve Foster, who headed over from six yards out after a delicious ball in from Louis Corrigan on the right.
And they were made to pay late on, when Burscough launched a counter attack after yet another Warrington chance had gone begging, where Beesley was on hand to calmly finish from Daniel Dunleavy’s pass.
