MOTORISTS are being warned to avoid the M62 near Burtonwood following a serious accident involving two lorries on the westbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 7 at 11.12 am today.
All three lanes of the motorway are currently closed. A number of vehicles have also been involved and the Air Ambulance was in attendance as firte crews cut free a person who was trapped in a vehicle.
A police investigation into the incident is now underway and is likely to take several hours.
Highways Agency traffic officers from the outstation at Newton-le-Willows are currently at the scene working to free drivers trapped behind the incident, which happened just after junction 8, by turning them around on the carriageway and sending them back to junction 8 where they can leave the motorway network or join the eastbound M62. Drivers planning to use the route, including those heading for Liverpool John Lennon Airport, are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternative route or delay their journeys if possible. Drivers travelling to Liverpool John Lennon Airport are advised to use the M56 instead.
An official diversion is in place with drivers advised to follow the ‘hollow black square’ symbol taking drivers southbound from junction 8 and back to junction 7 via the westbound A57.
Highways Agency traffic officers at the North West regional control centre at Newton-le-Willows and colleagues at the National Traffic Operations Centre near Birmingham have set signs across the local, regional and wider motorway network to advise drivers of the closure.
Drivers are urged to check travel conditions before setting out on journeys.
The Highways Agency provides live traffic information via its website www.highways.gov.uk/traffic, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile platforms, such as the iPhone. Local Twitter services are also available at @HAtraffic_nwest, @HAtraffic_yorks and @HAtraffic_pen9 for transpennine routes.
Providing they can do so safely, road users can also call the Highways Agency Information Line (0300 123 5000) to keep up to date with road conditions.
