WORK has started on a major transformation of a derelict shopping centre at Warrington.
Demolition of the older properties has started – to be followed by re-development of Harrison Square, Dallam with afford able homes for rent, a much-needed pharmacy and new shops.
The “delivering wellbeing in Bewsey and Dallam” project is being carried out by the borough council, Helena Partnerships and Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) on behalf of the Warrington Partnership.
Plans are being drawing up by Helena Partnerships.
Cllr Pat Wright, lead member for health and wellbeing and adult services
at Warrington Borough Council said: “The redevelopment of Harrison Square has been a long held ambition for the community, the council and local councillors who have called for the demolition of the derelict shops and for new retail provision to be sited in the area for a number of years.
“I’m thrilled work has now started and residents can see something being done.
“The vision for Bewsey and Dallam is to transform the area and the services available there, to deliver sustainable change for residents. We want to build stronger, more resilient and more active communities. The council and partners have made a huge commitment to this project and are re-focusing work in this area to ensure the best outcomes for our residents.”
Cllr Kate Hannon, lead member for leisure, community and culture, said:
“This project is all about neighbourhood working and all of us coming together to make a real difference in the local community. I am so pleased that this project is starting to take shape and look forward to watching it develop.”
GGHT chief executive Peter Mercer said: “We are delighted to see work beginning.
“The demolition of the square sends a message to the community that the partnership is very serious about delivering improvements to Bewsey and Dallam.”
Steve Moore, executive director of business development at Helena Partnerships, said: “Community regeneration and development is a key focus for Helena Partnerships, so we’re thrilled to be involved in a project that will have positive impact on the lives of residents in Warrington.”
It is anticipated that the plans will be ready towards the end of the year and will be put on display in the area for residents to see exactly what is proposed for Harrison Square.
