Ten man Town keep FA Cup dreams alive

WARRINGTON Town kept their FA Cup dreams alive as they held Sheffield to a goalless draw despite playing more than half the game with 10 men.
Top scorer Scott Metcalfe (pictured top) was handed a straight red by referee Mr Mainwaring for a high footed challenge on Sheffield captain Richard Stirrup on the half hour mark, but the home side were able to keep the visitors at bay and the two teams will now go again in a replay in Sheffield on Tuesday night.
It had been a relatively even opening before that, with Sheffield centre half Tom Whittaker coming closest, denied at point blank range by Town goalkeeper Karl Wills with a header from a left wing corner.
The game had struggled to find any rhythm and that only got worse after the red card, with the only real incident of note some superb defending by Phil Davies to deny Sheffield a one-on-one chance after a poor clearance by Wills.
Sheffield finished a stop-start half with a couple of half chances, first Joel Purkiss hit a speculative half volley over the bar after a succession of corners, and then Ashley Longstaffe saw his firm left footed shot parried away by Wills.
The second half never really got going either. The 10 men of Warrington had the first real half chance of the half, when Steve Foster failed to guide his header wide of Sheffield goalkeeper Joseph Green.
As time went on, the visitors got on top and looked the more likely, creating a few dangerous moments from corners, without really having a clear cut opportunity. When they did get through, they found Town goalkeeper Wills in good form.
A rare foray in to opposition territory saw Warrington create a chance on 75 minutes, when Conor Roberts drove through midfield and had a right footed shot well stopped by Green.
A place in the third qualifying round could have been won by either side in injury time. First, Town saw James McCarten’s free kick well saved by Green, before the rebound was cleared after a scramble, and then at the other end, Longstaffe was denied.
As it was, nothing could separate the teams and they will both be in the hat for the draw on Monday, before the replay is played on Tuesday night.
