Housing trust flags up dangers of gas

THE dangers of gas in the home were highlighted at a series of events organised by Warrington’s Golden Gates Housing Trust to flag up the annual Gas Safety Week.
Promoted by the Gas Safe Register, the week aimed to alert people to the dangers of having unsafe gas fires, boilers and cookers to to help them minimise the risks.
Tenants and staff were reminded of the potentially fatal consequences of having poorly fitted gas appliances and/or appliances which are either poorly serviced or, not serviced at all.
More than 20 GGHT staff benefitted from “gas safety awareness sessions” to help them understand the significance of gas safety in residents’ homes through the importance of gaining access, as well as their own home.
Two resident events took place at Bradley Common Community Centre and Westy Community Centre when staff members were on hand to offer advice and information on gas servicing and how to make gas service appointments.
They were also attended by GGHT’s gas maintenance supplier, Sure Group, who gave an insight into the free yearly gas service check.
GGHT tenants benefit from an annual Gas Safety Check, as the Trust are legally responsible for making sure all gas appliances, gas piping and flues in its homes are well maintained and safe.
The activities during the week aimed to stress how significant the dangers off gas can be and the importance of keeping well maintained gas appliances.
GGHT chairman Roy Smith (pictured) said: “Ensuring our residents’ safety is our number one priority. It is crucial that people understand the dangers that gas appliances can pose. We hope both residents and staff found the week useful but also potentially life saving. By following a few simple steps our customers can ensure that they are able to stay safe.”
