Greg Mackey benefit dinner to go ahead

A FUND-RAISING benefit dinner for former Warrington Wolves’ star Greg Mackey will go ahead as planned following the sudden death of the Aussie half-back.
The event will now celebrate the life of 52-year-old Mackey who died peacefully yesterday in New South Wales, Australia, after battling bowel cancer.
Organisers decided to proceed with the event at the Halliwell Jones Stadium next Monday (Sept 29) after consulting with his wife Amanda and the wider family who want the event proceed as planned.
Organiser Richard Shanks said: “It is likely that the evening will be a little more sombre in parts than was originally intended, and there will inevitably be some emotional moments, but, given the circumstances, that is only to be expected.
“It has been a difficult decision to come to – but made that much easier by the insistence of the family that we should go ahead and celebrate Greg’s life and in the knowledge that Greg will certainly be looking down upon us with that little smile of his and having a laugh with us.
“Let’s make it a fitting send-off for a truly great little man who became, in the eyes of many, a honorary Warringtonian despite his relatively short time amongst us.”
