WARRINGTON Wolves’ utility player Stefan Ratchford has agreed a new and improved deal to keep him at the club until November 2018 despite keen interest from the NRL in Australia.
The club is delighted to have secured Ratchford, 26, on this long-term contract within the English Super League on the back of recent interest and
opportunities down under.
Ratchford signed from neighbouring Super League side Salford ahead of the 2012 season making his Warrington debut in the February of that year. He has gone on to make 86 appearances, including 28 this season. He’s crossed for 39 tries, kicked 96 goals and two drop-goals.
This year has seen him play in a number of positions, adapting well to fullback, centre, halfback and loose forward making him an asset to any side.
Ratchford was a member of the Challenge Cup winning team in his first season with Warrington, also stepping out at Old Trafford in the back-to-back Grand Finals of 2012 and 2013.
On the international scene he has represented the England Knights while also being named in the England Elite training squad on a number of occasions most recently ahead of this Autumn’s Four Nations.
Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said: “To tie Stefan down for this length of time is fantastic news for the club. There’s no doubt a player of Stefan’s quality was getting attention from the NRL. His versatility is invaluable; in whichever position he is selected, he plays with a smile and does an outstanding job. He is a genuine match winner and can do special things. I’m delighted he’ll be continuing to do this in Warrington colours for many years.”
Ratchford added: “I’m really enjoying my time at Warrington and playing in Super League. We have an exciting squad here at the Wolves and I can only see it getting better with the new signings joining us for next season. We have a bit of unfinished business with the Grand Final and I’d love to win more with this group of lads. There are quite a few of us with long-term deals and it’s great that we will all be together for the next few years; it’s fantastic to be part of.”
