WARRINGTON Wolves will welcome Wigan Warriors’ strength and conditioner Michael Turner to the performance team for the next two seasons.
Turner played Rugby League in the junior and academy ranks at Wigan before joining the Royal Marines at the age of 18 in which he served for eight years.
His conditioning background comes from his time at the Warriors working as a volunteer before progressing alongside Shaun Wane from the academy set-up to heading the first team’s strength and conditioning programme for the last three years. His passion about the physical development of the academy players has seen many become established in the first team and on the international scene.
He has also been the head of physical performance on the international scene for Wales Rugby League for last two years working with the likes of Wolves’ Rhys and Ben Evans and performance staff Lee Briers and Ben Stirling.
Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith says: “Mick joins the club with a fantastic reputation and has been involved with a club that has been challenging for success for a number of years. He will look to continue the great strides the conditioning department has made over the past few years, while also adding a new perspective and angle on the preparation and recovery of the team.”
Turner says on joining the Wolves: “I’m looking forward to the challenge and to working with high-class players. From the outset Warrington seem to have a good culture and I’m looking to continue that. They have been a top club for the past five years and I’m grateful to Tony for giving me this opportunity.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have been at a club that’s had success over the last few years. I’ll be coming in from a winning culture so have that understanding of what it takes. It’s been a learning curve for me as I’ve learnt under three different coaches and some at international level with the RLWC2013 plus my military background. I’ve taken things from each coach and experience I’ve been involved with.
“My first job will be to get to know the players and see how I can get the best out of them. It’s a team sport but every player has their physical strengths and weaknesses that they need to work on. Chris has done a great job and I’m just looking to further develop that.”
