Eat better breakfasts campaign

“EATING a healthy breakfast gives you the best start to the day” is the latest message from Change4Life which the council is supporting.
The latest campaign is encouraging Warrington residents to eat better breakfasts and is called ‘Breakfast4Life’.
Breakfast4Life has simple tips and fun activities to help us choose healthier breakfast options, or help to find ways to fit in breakfast if you skip it altogether.
And Erin and Mia Donnelly aged six and four, are helping the council to spread the word about getting a healthy breakfast. Erin said: “I like breakfast because you get to eat something as soon as you get up so my tummy doesn’t rumble for the rest of the day. I love fruit the best because there are lots of different fruits so I can have a change every day.”
Cllr Pat Wright, executive board member for health, wellbeing and adult services, said: “Getting the best start to the day by having a good breakfast is an important part of being healthy. But many residents are missing out, choosing breakfast options that are high in sugar or fat, or not having anything at all. Eating breakfast gives us mental and physical energy for the morning, whether at home, work, school or out and about. People who eat regular breakfast are also less likely to be overweight and have reduced risk of certain diseases like diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
The following foods are all great ingredients for a healthy breakfast:
· Fruit and vegetables: these foods are a great source of vitamins and fibre and help you towards your recommended 5 a day. Fruit and vegetables that are fresh, tinned, dried, frozen or in juice form are all good for you.
· Starchy foods: bread (especially wholemeal), rice and cereals (especially wholegrain) that are lower-sugar and lower-salt.
· Milk and dairy: cheese, yoghurt and milk
· Non-dairy protein: meat, fish, eggs, beans and unsalted nuts.
