Burtonwood pays tribute to American veterans

NOSTALGIA is on the agenda this weekend at Burtonwood Heritage Centre as it pays tribute to thousands of Americans veterans stationed in Warrington at its annual Stars and Stripes Weekend.
The Old Hall museum, on the site of Gulliver’s World theme park resort, is offering guests a complete 1940s experience this Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September to celebrate its annual military-themed weekend.
The event is a favourite among American veterans who were stationed at the base during the war – and many of them make the transatlantic trip to Warrington every year to mark the occasion and get involved in celebrations.
Visitors to the centre over the weekend are set to enjoy military re-enactments, static displays, classic vehicles, vintage stalls, music, dancing, memorabilia and props at the centre, which was built in 1987 on part of the RAF Burtonwood air base.
A range of allied vehicles will be on display throughout the weekend and there will be a host of special events taking place, including a Saturday night dance featuring Sunnyside Swing and the Black Cat Trio.
Roy Thorpe-Apps from Burtonwood Heritage Centre said: “We can’t wait to welcome our American visitors to join local families this weekend, it’s the ideal way to pay tribute to those who served here during the war.
“RAF Burtonwood is such a huge part of Warrington’s history – thousands of American servicemen married local girls so it’s a fantastic get-together for so many people. It’s also a great way for children and adults alike to get a real glimpse into wartime Warrington.
Burtonwood Heritage Centre was built on the site of a RAF Burtonwood, formerly the largest airfield in Europe.
Around 60,000 US servicemen were stationed at RAF Burtonwood – known as the ‘Gateway to Europe’ – over a 50-year period from 1942 spanning the Cold War and WW2.
