STAFF at the Cheshire Dogs’ Home in Warrington – the sister operation to Manchester Dogs’ Home which was engulfed by flames during an arson attack last night, have been overwhelmed with the public response.
More than 1,000 people visited the Cheshire Dogs Home last night to donate money, food and register their interest to adopt – with an appeal fund already topping more than £600,000.
Staff at the Grappenhall based dogs home are still taking a steady stream of calls and visits to see the surviving dogs which were brought to Cheshire from the fire-ravaged kennels where at least 53 dogs died.
It is believed most of those which died were on ‘adoption row’ – which means many had been at the home for a while and were well known by staff, many of whom were today in tears and still reeling from their sudden loss.
Anna Stansfield, mananger at Cheshire Dogs Home said they have been inundated by support.
She said there had been overwhelming response.
“It was amazing to see so many people turn out to support us. We’ve just been inundated with people wishing us well and donating. It’s amazing. It’s definitely over a thousand people who have visited here.
“We’ve had lots of phone calls too from people wanting to adopt dogs.”
Today there has been a steady stream of support, donation, and grief in Warrington. The home, which already had 70 canine residents, has doubled its intake.
A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson at the Manchester Dogs Home in Harpurhey, Manchester.
Flames engulfed the building and smoke could be seen by thousands of residents in the city.
