Residents voice support for new foodstore

RESIDENTS have been voicing their support for a new foodstore at Lymm on the site of a former petrol station, ahead of proposals being considered by Warrington planners next Thursday (September 18).
Located in Rushgreen Road on the site of the former Rushgreen service station, the proposed store would have a sales area of 6,500 sq ft, parking for 57 cars and could create up to 35 jobs.
Ahead of the committee meeting, a number of local residents who have been contacted by the site owners, the Brookhouse Group, have called on local councillors to approve the plan.
Gillian Smith a resident on Rushgreen Road said: “The store would be located a stone’s throw from where I live, so be very convenient. I hope it’s approved as would provide jobs for the local community. I would certainly be interested in applying for a position if the proposal progresses.”
Claire Watkins, who lives within two miles of the site added: “I think it would be a fantastic idea as would stop me having to travel out of Lymm for my food shopping, so the sooner the better. Creating new local jobs would also be a bonus. I really hope councillors give it the go ahead.”
Another Lymm resident, Janet Dines commented: “I’m very much in favour of a new foodstore in Lymm. If the council give planning permission, I hope that it’s a high quality retailer as would welcome the opportunity to choose from a wider variety of brands when shopping.”
In May this year the Brookhouse Group held a public exhibition on the plans which was attended by nearly 400 local people. Responses received during and after the event, indicated that the majority were in favour of the proposal.
Last month, planning officers recommended that the scheme be approved and the parish council has confirmed it has no objection to the proposal – but members of the committee decided to visit the site before making a decision.
Tom Whitehead, town planning manager at Brookhouse said: “We hope that committee members will recognise the benefits that this proposal could offer the local community in Lymm. The store would bring this derelict, unsightly land back into use and many of the residents we have spoken to are looking forward to the potential job opportunities it could offer as well as the prospect of more shopping choice and convenience.”
If approved by Warrington Borough Council, construction is likely to start later this year which means the new store could be open in summer 2015.
